If your home or office is more than 50 years old, a complete rewire with a new electrical panel may be required. The first step in keeping your business and home safe from an electrical fire is getting an expert electrical system inspection. Timing for an inspection is particularly urgent if you are noticing any of the following: multiple blown fuses or tripped breakers, discolored switch plates or plugs, sizzling sounds, arcing, or cracked or broken insulation. Having knob-and-tube wiring can be dangerous and lack the capacity for today’s levels of power use. Aluminum wiring can also pose a fire hazard under certain environmental conditions.

Upgrades

Generally, the life expectancy of a circuit breaker is around 30 to 40 years. Breakers are designed to trip when there is an electrical problem on the circuit. Signs of a breaker possibly needing replacement include: a burning smell coming from the breaker or the electrical panel, discoloration on parts and frayed wires, and the breaker being hot to the touch.
